Why your HVAC business isn't showing up for 'AC repair near me' (and the fix)
By Lior Mechlovich · May 11, 2026
The query "AC repair near me" is the most valuable search an HVAC contractor can rank for. It's hot, it's now, and the customer is calling someone in the next 30 minutes. If you're not in the top 3 of the Google map pack for that search in your city, you're losing the highest-LTV calls your business will see all summer.
There are three reasons most HVAC contractors don't rank for "AC repair near me," and all three are fixable in under an afternoon. None of them require an SEO agency.
Reason 1: Your primary category is wrong
This is the single biggest miss. Sterling Sky ran a controlled test on an HVAC business that switched its Google Business Profile primary category from "AC Repair Service" to "HVAC Contractor." It dropped from #1 to #31 overnight. They switched it back; it went back to #1.
The category you pick matters enormously. For most HVAC contractors who do both install and repair, the right primary is "HVAC Contractor" with "Air Conditioning Repair Service" and "Heating Contractor" as secondaries. But for some local markets, the inverse is true. The only way to know is to look at what's working for the #1 ranking competitor in YOUR city.
How to check: search "AC repair near me" in your city. Look at the top 3 Google Business listings. Click each, scroll to "Category," and note what they have. If two of three have "Air Conditioning Repair Service" as primary, that's your tell.
Reason 2: Emergency hours aren't turned on
"AC repair near me" peaks at two times: weekday afternoons (when offices realize the system is failing) and weekday evenings (when homeowners get home to a hot house). Most HVAC contractors are technically available those hours but haven't told Google.
Open your Google Business Profile → Hours → "Add more hours" → enable "24-hour" or set custom emergency hours.
This is the single fastest way to win the "open now" search filter. Google calls "Open now" the #5 most-important local pack factor. Most HVAC contractors leave it off.
Reason 3: Your reviews stopped a month ago
Sterling Sky's research found that an 18-day pause in new reviews can cause rankings to "fall off a cliff." Recency matters more than total count. A business with 200 reviews where the last one was two years ago is weaker than a business with 90 reviews getting 15 a month.
If you're not asking every customer for a review by text the day after the service call, you're falling behind. Use whatever field-service tool you have — Housecall Pro, ServiceTitan, Jobber — to send a one-tap review request SMS after every completed job. We provide the template copy you should use for this.
What "AC repair near me" requires you to win
The actual ranking signals, in priority order:
- Proximity to the searcher (not controllable, but constrains everything else)
- Primary category accuracy — Reason 1 above
- Open now at search time — Reason 2 above
- Review velocity + recency — Reason 3 above
- Keywords in business name — controversial but well-documented. If your legal DBA can include a relevant term, use it.
- Visible street address, even SABs benefit from displaying an address per Sterling Sky's 8,186-business study.
Fixing 1-3 in one afternoon is the highest-use move available to you. Items 4-6 take longer but are still under your control.
What about ChatGPT and AI Overviews?
Different game, different fixes. ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews use Yelp + BBB + Angi + HomeAdvisor cross-references heavily — see the directory checklist for HVAC, and the top-3 Google map pack rank correlates with ChatGPT recommendation only about 45% of the time. We check both surfaces separately.
FAQ
Won't switching categories tank my existing rankings? If you're already ranking, changing the primary category is risky. Run our check first to see what your top 3 competitors use, then decide. Don't make the switch blind.
Should I list every kind of HVAC service separately? Yes. Each service gets its own listing with a 2-3 sentence description. Customers search for specific things ("mini split installation," "duct cleaning," "furnace tune-up") — not just "HVAC."
How long does it take to see results after fixing my primary category? Usually within 24-72 hours. Map pack rankings update fast. AI visibility (ChatGPT mentions) takes longer, typically 30-45 days as their training cycles refresh.
My business name has 'HVAC' in it — does that help? Yes. Sterling Sky and Whitespark both confirm keywords in business name are a meaningful ranking factor. Don't change your name to game it, but if your legal name includes the keyword, you're starting with an advantage.
