5 free directories every plumber should be on (and why ChatGPT cares)

If you only fix one thing on your Google page this week, fix your directory presence. AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews cross-reference at least five free directories before recommending a plumber. If your phone number is wrong on Yelp or you're missing from BBB entirely, those tools may not trust your data, and they'll recommend someone else.

Why directories matter more than they used to

A few years ago, "citation building" meant getting your business name and address listed on hundreds of directories. That era is over. Quality on the top 30, not quantity on 300. Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey put citations back in the top tier of factors, and BrightLocal's 2025 AI-search study found that roughly one in three local-intent AI queries pulls data from Yelp specifically. The same study found AI tools cross-reference BBB, Angi, HomeAdvisor, and Thumbtack before producing a recommendation.

What this means for you: if your phone number on Yelp doesn't match Google, an AI tool sees inconsistent data and weighs your business lower. Even if you rank #1 in Google Maps, you can be invisible to ChatGPT.

The 5 directories to claim this week

  1. Yelp Business — If you only do one, do this. Yelp is the single most-cited source by ChatGPT for local plumbing queries. Claim, verify, fill in every field.
  2. BBB (Better Business Bureau) — Free profile. Accreditation costs money; the listing doesn't. AI tools weight BBB as a trust signal.
  3. Angi (formerly Angie's List) — Heavy in residential trade searches. Free basic listing.
  4. HomeAdvisor — Same parent as Angi; separate listing. Free basic profile.
  5. Bing Places — Microsoft's equivalent of Google Business Profile. Powers Bing Copilot, the Edge browser sidebar, and Outlook's "Around you" feature. Most plumbers forget it exists.

Bonus: Thumbtack is worth doing if you're willing to respond to leads.

What "claim" actually means

For each directory:

  1. Search for your business. If it exists already (Yelp often pre-creates listings from public data), click "Claim this business."
  2. Verify ownership — usually a phone-call verification or postcard.
  3. Fill in exact NAP: name, address, phone. Must match your Google Business Profile character-for-character. "Acme Plumbing LLC" and "Acme Plumbing" are different businesses to a fuzzy-matching AI.
  4. Add hours, services, photos, and a description.
  5. Set a calendar reminder to update each profile when anything changes (a new phone number, expanded service area, new service type).

The total time investment for all five is one focused afternoon. The compounding payoff plays out for years.

How to know if it's working

Two ways:

What to NOT waste time on

  • Mass citation building services that promise "200 directories for $99" — these dilute your top 5 with low-trust junk.
  • Geo-tagging photos with EXIF data. Sterling Sky proved this has zero impact on rankings; Google strips EXIF on upload anyway.
  • llms.txt files on your site. Despite the hype, every analyst who's looked at crawler logs has found near-zero effect. (We auto-generate one in our schema bundle for cheap hygiene, but it's not where you should focus.)

FAQ

How long does it take to see results from directory fixes? Yelp and Bing Places usually re-index within a week. ChatGPT's training cycle is slower — most plumbers see new AI mention patterns within 30-45 days after fixing major citation gaps.

Do I need to pay for premium listings on Yelp, Angi, or HomeAdvisor? No. The free listings are what AI tools see. Paid premium tiers buy you placement within those directories' own search results, useful, but not what fixes your AI visibility.

What if my business name is slightly different across directories? Pick one canonical version (match it to your legal entity or your Google Business Profile, whichever is your truth-source) and update every directory to match. Small variations confuse fuzzy matching.

Does this work for SAB (service-area business) plumbers without a storefront? Yes. Most plumbers are SABs. Each directory has a "service area business" option — use it, list the cities/ZIPs you serve, and skip displaying a storefront address (but check Google separately — for Google specifically, displaying a real address often helps).
