How to get cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity & Gemini: the local citation playbook (2026)

Most advice on getting picked by AI stops at the foundation — claim your Google Business Profile, fix your listings, get reviews. That's right, and it's covered in the AEO playbook. But the foundation only makes you eligible. It doesn't get you quoted.
This is the next layer: the content and mention tactics that turn "the AI could name me" into "the AI does name me." It's built on the one piece of real research the field has, applied to a local business.
The research, in one line
The field got its name from a 2024 academic paper — Aggarwal and co-authors, "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization," presented at KDD 2024. They tested what actually changes whether content gets surfaced inside AI answers. The headline finding: adding citations, statistics, and quotations lifted visibility by roughly 40%.
Why? Because an AI is safer quoting content that looks sourced and specific. A sentence with a real number and a named source is easy to lift into an answer. A sentence of marketing fluff is a risk. That single insight drives everything below.
Be quotable: write what the AI can lift
The foundation makes you eligible. Quotable content makes you the source. Three rules:
Answer the exact question, as the heading
AI engines match questions to answers. So make your pages be the answer. Heading: "How much does a water heater install cost in Phoenix?" First two sentences: the direct answer. Then the detail. Compare:
- Won't get quoted: "We offer affordable, professional water heater services for your home."
- Will get quoted: "A standard water heater install in Phoenix runs $1,500-$3,500 in 2026, depending on tank size and whether you're switching to tankless. Most single-family replacements land around $2,200."
The second one has a number, a place, a year, and a range. The AI can drop it straight into an answer. The first one says nothing it can use.
Use specific numbers, dates, and named sources
This is the GEO paper's finding in practice. Real local prices. The year. "According to BrightLocal's 2025 study…" Concrete beats vague every time, and specificity is what the AI reaches for. If you make a claim, source it or quantify it.
Cover the questions customers actually ask
Build pages around the real queries — cost, emergency availability, specific services, "how long does X take," "do I need a permit for X in [city]." Each is a chance to be the quoted answer for a question competitors left vague. This is the same logic behind our question pages — answer one real question per page, completely.
Get mentioned where AI quotes most
Being quotable on your own site is half of it. The other half is being mentioned by sources the AI trusts more than you — because you didn't write them.
- Yelp — cited in about one in three local-intent AI answers per BrightLocal's 2025 study, more than any other directory. A complete, claimed Yelp profile isn't optional; it's a room the AI reads.
- Reddit and forums — AI leans on these for local recommendations because they read as real people. A genuine mention in a local subreddit thread about your trade carries weight you can't fake. Earn it honestly.
- Local roundups and press — a "best [trade] in [city]" article, the local paper, a chamber listing. Third-party vouching the AI trusts.
You don't need many. A handful of credible mentions plus quotable pages, on top of a solid foundation, is what flips you from eligible to cited.
The order that works
Don't skip to content if your foundation is shaky — it won't help. Do it in this order:
- Foundation first. Google Business Profile complete, listings consistent, reviews fresh. (The playbook covers this.)
- Then quotable content. Build the pages that answer your money questions with numbers and sources.
- Then mentions. Claim Yelp, earn the Reddit and roundup mentions.
- Wait a cycle. 30-90 days for the engines to refresh, then re-check.
Check whether it's working
