Can I add my business to Perplexity?
By Lior Mechlovich · May 13, 2026
Short answer
There's no direct way to add your business to Perplexity. It retrieves from the open web with Reddit weighted heavily, plus a curated authority list. The path is indirect: appear in the sources Perplexity cites (Reddit threads, listicles, Yelp, your own structured site).
How Perplexity retrieves citations
Perplexity is a search-first AI tool. Every answer comes with a list of cited sources at the top, usually 3 to 8 URLs. The retrieval system is closer to a smart search engine than to ChatGPT. It goes out to the open web for each query, fetches a small set of pages, then synthesizes the answer from those pages specifically.
The sources skew differently from ChatGPT. In our tracking across roughly 400 local-service queries last quarter, Perplexity cited Reddit threads in about 40% of its answers, far higher than ChatGPT or AI Overviews. It also leans on authority sites like Wirecutter, expertise.com, and the New York Times when they have relevant coverage. Standard directories (Yelp, BBB, Angi) appear too, but less consistently than they do for ChatGPT.
There's no Perplexity Business Manager. No "add my business" form. The only path is to make sure you appear in the sources Perplexity is already retrieving from.
Getting on Reddit without spam-flagging yourself
This is the highest-payoff move and also the most likely to backfire. Reddit's spam filters are aggressive, the moderators of city-specific subs are protective, and any post that looks like self-promotion gets removed inside an hour. I've watched 30 plumbers try to "do Reddit marketing." About 28 of them get shadow-banned within a week.
What actually works:
- Be a real user first. Comment helpfully on other people's posts for a few weeks. Build karma. Reddit ranks accounts by age and comment quality.
- Answer questions, don't promote. When someone asks "anyone know a good plumber in Phoenix?" in r/Phoenix, the helpful answer is to suggest two or three businesses, yours included, named once, with context like "I worked with these guys when my water heater went last year." Mention them all as peer recommendations, not as a pitch.
- Disclose if asked. If someone calls you out, own it. Reddit hates stealth marketing way more than honest disclosure.
You can also encourage real customers to post about you. If you do excellent work, ask the customer if they'd be willing to share in their local sub. About one in twenty will say yes. Those posts compound for years.
Why listicle inclusion matters
The Aggarwal et al. GEO paper (2024) showed AI tools over-cite listicles by roughly a 3:1 ratio versus long-form prose. Perplexity in particular loves "best X in Y" pages because they're structured exactly the way Perplexity wants to format its answer: a short intro, then a ranked list of named entities.
The listicles that get cited the most are not the SEO-spam ones with 50 businesses. They're the curated lists: expertise.com's "Best Plumbers in Sacramento," your local newspaper's annual roundup, Yelp's editor-picked top 10. Getting onto these is part PR, part SEO, part actually being good. We track which listicles cite our customers and use that as a leading indicator of AI mention rate.
There's also a tier of programmatic local listicles (we run one at /best/, and we publish openly, we don't pretend not to). Being scored highly on those is a flywheel: AI cites the listicle, the listicle cites you, AI eventually starts citing you directly.
How to monitor Perplexity citations
There's no Search Console for Perplexity. Two practical workarounds:
Manual prompt sweeps. Pick 5-10 buyer-intent queries for your trade and city ("best plumber in Austin," "emergency electrician Phoenix"). Run them through Perplexity weekly. Log who gets cited and what sources Perplexity used. This is what our AI Visibility audit automates, but you can do it by hand.
Reverse-image-search the cited sources. When a competitor is named, find the exact source Perplexity cited (it's in the chip at the top). Visit that page. If it's a directory you don't have a profile on, that's your fix. If it's a Reddit thread, see if you can earn a mention in a similar thread.
Run our free check and we'll show you which sources are pulling weight in Perplexity for your trade, plus which directories are missing pieces of you.
Related questions
Does Perplexity index my Google Business Profile?
Indirectly. Perplexity doesn't crawl Google directly, but the businesses it names usually appear strongly in Google-adjacent sources (Yelp, BBB, directory listicles). A complete GBP feeds those downstream sources. So clean it up, then expect Perplexity to follow within a crawl cycle.
Can I pay Perplexity for placement?
Perplexity launched sponsored answers in late 2024 for select advertisers, but they're national-brand only as of this writing. There's no self-serve local placement product yet. Save your money and invest it in the organic sources Perplexity actually cites.
Are there APIs to submit business data to Perplexity?
No public submission API for businesses exists. Perplexity offers a developer API for queries, not for data ingestion. The closest thing is making sure your site is crawlable, has a clean sitemap, and is well-structured. Perplexity's crawler will find it.
How is Perplexity different from ChatGPT for local recommendations?
Perplexity weights Reddit much more heavily, closer to 40% of its citations for service queries per our internal tracking. It also prefers authority sites (NYTimes Wirecutter, expertise.com) when available. ChatGPT relies more on Yelp and the standard directory set. Different sources, different priorities.
